Bulgarian meat and cheese sandwiches

Bulgarian meat and cheese sandwiches are a delicious and hearty meal that blends rich meats, flavorful cheeses, and rustic bread into a satisfying dish. With endless customization options, they can be enjoyed in different ways while maintaining their traditional Bulgarian essence.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound 450 g minced meat (see notes)
  • Approximately 8 slices of bread
  • 1 egg optional
  • 1 ½ cups 200 g grated cheese (see notes)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried savory see notes
  • teaspoon ground fenugreek see notes
  • ½ teaspoon paprika optional
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin optional
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (220°C).
  2. In a bowl, thoroughly mix the minced meat, grated cheese, egg, and spices. Use a butter knife or spoon to evenly spread the mixture over the bread slices.
  3. Place the slices on a large baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  4. Switch the oven to top heat only.
  5. Bake the sandwiches for about 20 minutes, or until the meat is fully browned.
  6. Serve immediately.

Notes

Meat: The ideal option is a mixture of pork and beef, but you can also choose either one on its own.
Cheese: While the original recipe uses Bulgarian kashkaval, you can substitute with any yellow cheese of your choice, such as cheddar, gouda, emmental, or others.
